Nvidia GeForce RTS 50 Series Released
The most expected and probably useful update from Nvidia at the CES 2025 keynote event was the launch of their GeForce RTX 50 Series Graphics Cards. These cards continue the evolution of what made Nvidia a successful company, graphics cards. They have included a bunch of AI bells and whistles in the form of their DLSS AI technology. In previous generations they have DLSS spatial upscaling and they have now added temporal upscaling too. So the graphics card renders at a lower resolution and frame rate and their AI model adds pixels and frames to achieve simulated higher framerate and resolution. The utility of this is arguable because it is essential an AI interpolation of pixels that were not rendered by a physics based graphics engine, so they are guaranteed to contain physics errors. But the smother motion and more HD look might be enough to make it look better. Try for yourself.
The FPS boost from 141 FPS to 245 FPS is really just number hype because as a visual perception scientist I can tell you that the effective framerate of the human visual system is about 100 FPS. We cannot see a difference in framerates higher than than. However, these performance gains are not useless because they can render 100 FPS using less energy.
I've been a fan an customer of Nvidia since the 90's and I hope they realize their core business is really GPUs. AI uses are nice and they have almost all of the hype and venture capital these days, but the real use of Nvidia devices sold is computer gaming and visual effects rendering. We NEED those things for our current entertainment expectations. AI could go away tomorrow and no one would lose a night of sleep. So keep making the GPUs Nvidia and don't forget about your core customers in all the AI hype!
They show up to 2x performance boost over the 40 series GPUs. So it looks like a really impressive new line of compute resources.
